The liberation of living Alcohol Free
I love the simplicity that an alcohol-free life brings me.
I’ve always been an adventurous soul. I love weekends away with friends, exploring new places, and cramming as much as possible into every day. When I was drinking, though, those weekends came at a cost. Late nights were seen as part of maximising the fun, followed by early, hazy mornings squeezing in some kind of exercise so I could feel like I was making the most of the experience.
By the time it was Monday again, I’d be exhausted. I’d drag myself through the start of the week and often wouldn’t feel fully right again until Wednesday.
Now that I’m alcohol-free, I get all of the highs and none of the lows.
I still spend quality time with friends. I still have adventures. But now I also get nourishing sleep, wake up early feeling refreshed, and am fully present for every moment.
This weekend, Fiona and I had the best time in Fife. We swam in the tidal pools, took part in a Parkrun, enjoyed an afternoon snooze while reading in the sunshine, and treated ourselves to a fish supper at the local chippy overlooking the harbour. Before heading home, we squeezed in a final early-morning cold dip.
It was simple.
It was joyful.
It was enough.
I’ve come home feeling refreshed, nourished, and full of gratitude—for my friend, for the beautiful country of Scotland that I now call home, and for this life I’ve created. I return rested, able to show up more fully in my relationships. After meaningful rest, I feel regenerated and excited to dive into new projects and interests.
I wouldn’t swap any of it.
I love the ripple effect that one decision has had on every area of my life. What started as stepping away from alcohol has become so much more than that. It has given me energy, presence, connection, adventure, and a deeper appreciation for the simple things.
Alcohol-free living is just the BEST gift I have ever given myself!
